8 Rules of Talking Politics at Work - The Muse

8 Rules of Talking Politics at Work - The Muse8 Rules of Talking Politics at WorkThe golden rule of discussing politics at work is to not discuss politics at work. But with politics being discussed everywhere you look nowadays, its pretty difficult to completely avoid talking about it when youre at the office. With that said, just because it is everywhere doesnt mean that you just bring it up whenever theres a lull in conversation. After all, youve probably seen just how quickly one Facebook status posted by a friend can turn into a full-out comment war. In an effort to avoid that (but not pretend like were all robots who are in a bubble from nine to five), Ive come up with a few new golden rules for having these tough conversations. And then leaving them with your dignity intact.1. Assume the BestIf you tritt off a conversation thinking the worst in people, then you wont be able to accept their points as valid, and the whole talking about current events experience will be lousy for e veryone involved. Assume that the people youre speaking with care about these issues just as much as you do- and they dont disagree with you for the sake of disagreeing with you, but rather because of their own set of beliefs and values. 2. Stay InformedIf youre planning to have these conversations at work, it would be in your best interest to stay informed as to whats happening. And that doesnt just mean reading tweets or sticking to the same blog you check every day. No, if you want to have a good conversation, you should be getting your information from a variety of sources. Not only will this bolster your points, but itll probably also open your eyes a bit.3. Use I StatementsEven if you think your opinion should be the law of the land, you should start every sentence with I think. Because even if the other rolle agrees with you, its never a good idea to put words in someone elses mouth. And if you start to hear yourself saying You it might be time to step away, because the only thing that follows you in these conversations is usually an accusation. 4. ListenBe prepared to listen twice as much as you talk. If youre starting this discussion just to hear your own voice and get validation for your opinions- stop, save it for your friends. Only jump in if youre trying to move the conversation forward, not if youre trying to win it. 5. Ask QuestionsIt isnt enough just to listen to others speak. You can figure out where theyre coming from simply by asking a few open-ended questions. Questions like Can you explain that a bit more? or Would you mind sharing how you came to that conclusion? tend to work wonders in keeping the conversation civil. And hey, you might just learn something and change your own mind.6. Choose Your Battles (and Battlegrounds) WiselyWhen you overhear people in the kitchen talking about a situation thats near and dear to your heart, take a beat before jumping in. Is this your CEO and COO? If so, are you sure you want to risk offending them wi th your viewpoints on international policy? If it is people you feel comfortable going back and forth with, is this the right place to do it? Do you think everyone in the kitchen will feel comfortable (and not want to run to HR) when the conversations over? 7. Know When to Step AwayThere is always that one person who is just looking to get you riled up. Theyll advance a crazy hypothesis and then defend it like the gospel. Or, theyll make inflammatory remarks about personal issues because they know its something you care a lot about. Dont take the bait. Simply put your headphones back in and get back to work. (Or, fine, dont get back to work- watch a YouTube video that you know always makes you laugh first.)8. Be AwareBefore delving into your points, take a moment to take stock of your audience. Are they willing? Or, are they just waiting for their food to finish heating up in the microwave? Sure, Laura mightve initially brought up a candidates statement from the night before, but th at doesnt mean she should be subjected to all your thoughts on the topic. Make sure youre having a conversation, not standing on a soap box. Off-topic workplace discussions are meant to relieve the pressure of your regular job. Dont let a discussion about politics threaten your sanity, your friendships, or worse, your career. Commit these rules to heart, and you should steer clear of any conversation disasters.

3 Follow-Up Questions to Ask When You Didnt Get the Job

3 Follow-Up Questions to Ask When You Didnt Get the Job3 Follow-Up Questions to Ask When You Didnt Get the JobIt happens to all of us- we find a job were excited about, carefully craft our resume and titelbild letter, send in an application, go through multiple interviewsall to find out we didnt get the job. Its a deflating and disappointing situation. However, learning from our past experiences is the best way to improve ourselves and land the next job. Asking for feedback from a recruiter or interviewer can provide you with valuable information. While you may be tempted to outright ask why you didnt get the job, youll have better luck if you ask questions that are centered around your performance. Consider these three follow-up questions to ask when you didnt get the job. What were one or two things I could improve on in the interview? To up your chances of getting a response to your question, make it easy on interviewers. If your interview was fairly recent, its likely the interview er can quickly think of one or two things off the top of their head you can improve upon. This question is broad enough that you may receive feedback that ranges from concern with a specific answer you gave, nerves that got the best of you, or even poor performance on a sample work test.Do you have any feedback on my resume or cover letter?A lot of job seekers struggle with writing a strong resume and cover letter. Feedback on these two items could make you a much stronger candidate in your next potential job opportunity. If the HR recruiter indicates that your documents contained typos or lacked originality, fix it ASAP before you apply to another job.Was I missing any relevant skills or experience? If you think you aced the interview, but still didnt get the job, asking this question may help you figure out if someone with more experience beat you to the job. If the recruiter says that you were lacking any skills or years of experience, think of ways in which you can fix it for the next job application. Perhaps a class, a certification, or some volunteer experience will help.Asking for feedback when you didnt get the job can take guts. Not every employer will oblige either. According to AOL.com, a survey of the tech industry found that 52 percent of those who DO attempt to get feedback, never get a reply. If youre one of the lucky ones to get a response, be sure to take the advice to heart and use it to land your next job.Readers, have you ever asked follow-up questions when you didnt get the job? Realistic First Job Expectations for New College Graduates

Realistic First Job Expectations for New College GraduatesRealistic First Job Expectations for New College GraduatesLast week I spoke with a startup business owner busily hiring his first round of entry-level talent. While he was excited to welcome newly-graduated Millennial talent for the versatility and depth of knowledge they bring in the world of social media, he also felt frustrated by the expectations he had encountered so far. From his point of view, it seems like every candidate expected Ping-Pong tables, long lunch breaks and free gourmet coffee 24/7, and he isnt offering those perks any time soon. However, the opportunity he is offering feels like a golden one to him the ability to learn from the best in the business, a competitive starting salary and a business casual office environment. We all know that interns run around the office fetching coffee and dont get paid well, if at all. But what about your first real job out of college? Yes, you have a degree and possibly som e real world experience. But in todays workplace, does that mean you no longer have to Earn your stripes or Pay your dues? And how does this fit in with the overall attitude that Millennials refuse to settle? The answer lies in a realistic look at the job market. What Benefits Does the Job Market Support?According to Accentures 2015 U.S. College Graduate Employment Study, high percentages of recent graduates reported underemployment, low salaries and a lack of learning opportunities in the jobs they were offered. Its not a matter of grads not preparing themselves for better opportunities. Eighty-two percent looked at the job market before choosing a major, and 72 percent participated in an internship during college. However, these opportunities simply arent as available as grads have hoped. Only 52 percent of the most recent respondents are employed full-time, and 49 percent of graduates consider themselves underemployed.Salaries arent exactly exciting, either. Even though 85 percen t of grads expected to earn more than $25,000 a year, only 59 percent actually do. These numbers indicate that leaving college with high expectations might leave you less than pleased when the job offers come in. To keep your spirits high and stay appreciative of the offer you do get, youre better off adjusting your expectations. You should still look for and negotiate for the best job offer you can, but you should do so with an understanding that your first job may just be an opportunity to establish yourself and figure out where you want to take your career.Your first job isnt likely to be the high-salaried, flexible, Ping-Pong competition you might expect from reading about high-profile companies in the news, but thats OK. The opportunity is what youre after. 2015 College Grads Should Focus On OpportunityThe future looks bright for full-time job opportunities, and thats what college graduates need to get their foot in the door. Full-time job listings for new grads on Simply Hired have risen 20 percent between 2014 and 2015, resulting in nearly 240,000 job opportunities in the U.S. These opportunities may not come with huge salaries and outrageous perks, but they do offer the tauglichkeit for much-needed resume experience and grooming for bigger, better opportunities. Jobs dont need to be at big companies, either. Eighty-five percent of those surveyed want to work for smaller companies, presumably where there are more opportunities for responsibility and promotion. If youre a college grad still seeking your first job, keep an eye out as listings peak in July and October. But dont work off of a must-have list that includes superficial perks like quirky office environment and mid-level salaries. Its up to college grads to keep expectations in check and carefully evaluate each job listing for its potential as a stepping stone in a long, successful career. And the beginning of that process is staying realistic about entry-level jobs right out of college.Did you g et the job? Heres how to nail the first 30 days

Tips for Creating an Excellent Resume to Land an Internship

Tips for Creating an Excellent Resume to Land an InternshipTips for Creating an Excellent Resume to Land an InternshipA successful career starts with a great resume. Heres how to sell yourself with very little experience. In todays job market, the internship has become the new entry-level position. If you want to build a successful career, it starts with a series of internships, co-ops and fellowships throughout your college career. But to land these coveted opportunities, you must first write a winning resume.I shared with Business Insiders Jacquelyn V. Smith a sample resume and my top tips for job landseekers with no experience. Here are the top takeawaysKeep the layout clean.Stick with one font type throughout the document thats easy to read online and offline such as Arial, Times New Roman, or Calibri. Be consistent in how you represent locations (Atlanta, GA vs. Atlanta, Georgia) and time (Summer 2012 vs. May 2012 August 2012 vs. 05/2012 08/2012), so its easy to scan and pick o ut the important information. In addition, the headers and main sections of information are centered on the page, which Ladders eye-tracking study revealed is how recruiters tend to scan resumes.Include a link to your professional profile. You havent already, create at least one social media profile thats dedicated to your future profession. If you plan to work in a more creative field when you graduate, consider developing an online portfolio you can include in the contact information section of your resume. Also, increase the security settings on your personal social media accounts to make sure theyre safely hidden away from hiring managers eyes.Make your goals clear. If your resume was passed along to someone by a friend, would the reader know right away what type of internship or first job youre looking for? Include a professional title and summary at the top of the resume that clearly states your goals,so the reader never has to guess. Even though youre still developing your pers onal brand, your summary should explain the value you bring to the table.Play up your selling points. When you dont have any relevant work experience, you have to get a little creative with the layout of your resume to showcase your other strengths such as your leadership activities, relevant coursework, and academic achievements. Include your work experience, even if it isnt directly tied to your internship goals because it demonstrates your work ethic, but move it towards the bottom of the resume.Dont list your references. As a college student you only get one page of resume real estate dont waste it by including a list of references or stating References available upon request. Employers dont ask for this information until you make it to a face-to-face interview, and they know youll provide it if they request it.While employers dont expect their prospective interns to have loads of relevant experience, they do want to see an active, well-rounded student whos genuinely interested in their job opportunity.Click on the following link to view the full list of resume tips and a sample resume on Business Insider.

7 Signs Youre Stuck in a Rut (and Need to Make a Change Today)

7 Signs Youre Stuck in a Rut (and Need to Make a Change Today)7 Signs Youre Stuck in a Rut (and Need to Make a Change Today)Sometimes, its hard to notice when werestuckverzierungin a rut. You could go through the dull, numbing pain of everyday activities and not feel anydesire to changeanything. After all, as humans we have the amazing ability toadapt and copewith nearly any situation. The downside though, is that we get used to things that make us unhappy. Ideas or places we used to resist eventually become the same things we cling onto, not out of need or want, but out of familiarity. Here are some signs that you may be in a rut at work1. Its Hard for You to Get Worked Up or Excited About AnythingAstudy by The Dana Foundationshowed how people whore depressed perceive the world differently from others. When upbeat music was played, they were less likely to notice or become excited.Being stuck in a rut is like living in a muted world, where you landsee things in black and white rather than in vivid colors. Sometimes, its not our surroundings, but our perception that changes what the world looks like.2. You Keep Reminiscing About the PastEveryone gets nostalgic from time to time. We like to think of pleasant, happy memories that evoke powerful emotions. But when those memories are used to substitute experiences in the present, its a sign that youre stuck somewhere you dont want to be.While its tempting to look at the past through rose-tinted glasses, remember that there are good and bad memories, and a lot mora in between the two. Dont let the past stall you in the present.3. Your Health and Well-Being Arent a PriorityWhen you just dont care about anything, your inner thoughts get reflected on the outside as well. Maybe you stopped your daily exercise routine, you dont care about your appearance, or you dont bother eating healthily anymore.Falling into a rut is a gradual, downward spiral that affects all aspects of your life. By neglecting your well-being, you neg lect all other aspects of your life. Bad experiences at work can carry over into our personal lives as well. If you havent been taking care of yourself lately, think about why thats the case.4. You Daydream About an Alternate RealityEscaping from time to time is perfectly fine and can be a good thing. Whether its by chatting with a co-worker, listening to good music, or finally getting away on vacation, doing something different helps break up our routine and lets us explore. But it may be time for bigger changes when you constantly think about being somewhere else rather than where you are right now.Be careful. Daydreaming too often can sabotage your long-term goals because it can act as a substitute for actually doing something to improve your situation. If you want to change your life, try tochange your environment.5. You Dont See the Purpose of Anything You DoMoney alone isnt a very good motivator. In order to enjoy any form of work, there needs to a sense that what you do is re warding or stimulating at least.Ask yourself Are you growing or learning new skills in the work you do? If youre starting to feel stagnant, its time to look for new roles or take on new learning opportunities. There arent many things out there more frustrating than spinning your wheels in one spot.6. You Find Yourself Feeling Unwell on a Regular BasisI once knew someone who was constantly suffering from stomach problems for nearly a year due to stress at work. After quitting, her stomach problems went away, and she has felt much better since then.Stress, unhappiness, or fatigue can cause us to feel physical pain, but we ignore them too often because we figure that illnesses can sort themselves out. Staying in a bad situation can deteriorate your health until its too late.7. You Stay in a Situation Because You Believe Theres Nothing Else Out ThereIts a poor excuse to get stuck somewhere because you dont think there are any other alternatives. It becomes obvious when other people do i t, yet we make all sorts of reasons for ourselves. When it comes to job hunting and finding great opportunities, we can become so fixated on obtaining that one thing that we think nothing else will do. We forget about the other possibilities that are just as good, or better.Open yourself to chance. When you explore multiple opportunities, you can see whats out there and give yourself different options to choose from. This article was originally published on Inc. During the Holidays, Incorporate Work and Family Instead of Balancing Them

During the Holidays, Incorporate Work and Family Instead of Balancing Them Ive often notlageiced how so many of these perfect work/life balance articles tend to be structured around balancing work with toddlers and babies in the household and less about what happens to that kind of balance once the kids start to grow up. As both a mom and a CEO of my own company, MyCorporation.com, the holidays are already hectic enough at the office, but add in two sons who are no longer of pre-K age and have two weeks off for winter break in that mix and what happens to that balance? It shifts into an incorporation of both work and family instead, making it easier to merge the two together and less stressful to strive for perfection during a season that puts so much emphasis on the notion as it is. How exactly does one incorporate the pair together successfully and pressure-free? These are my tried and true tips for incorporating the workplace with kids verging on the cusp of their tweenage years and beyond.1) Take Em to the OfficeIf you work in a particularly festive and merry work environment, this is a great way for your kids to engage in the activities offered while avoiding any feelings of potential boredom that could creep in. Assuming that you have your own space, let your kids work on homework or assign them smaller craft projects to keep them busy and quiet and make sure they know to be respectful of other members of the office working as well. Giving your kids little projects to work on rather than allowing them to play around online for eight hours straight helps teach them the importance of hard work and diligence. Plus, theyre probably very proud to see their mom working hard and taking action with her great career2) Enroll in a Winter CampIf you take several meetings out of the office during the day or have to travel for your job, its not always feasible to take the kids wit h you to work every single day. Look into finding some great camps for kids instead, especially winter camps. They dont have to be enrolled in camp every day, but a few days a week for winter break will add some much needed activity and excitement to their typical routines and allow for interaction with their own age groups. And speaking of that, find a few of their friends to go along with them and make it a party3) Stay OrganizedWhen youre not organized, things can snowball away from you (no pun intended) pretty fast. Im a huge fan of lists and planning and like to keep organized as much as possible to keep the entire family and all of my work responsibilities in check. It always feels good to check off the tasks on your list without needing to check them twice like Santa (okay, pun definitely intended this time)4) BreatheMerging your work life with your children, like every work/life balance, is sure to have plenty of stressful moments ahead, particularly during the holidays when the parties, events, and family gatherings are in full swing. Stop and take deep breaths often. By keeping calm, youre a lot more likely to accomplish your goals than if you act crazy or harried. Take the time to count your blessings as well. Recognize all of the good things you have and be grateful for those things instead of losing sight in whats important. Tis the season, after all

4 Unwritten Rules You Should Follow at the Office

4 Unwritten Rules You Should Follow at the Office4 Unwritten Rules You Should Follow at the Office An employee and an employer have both an official and unofficial relationship. Your official employment agreement may lay out work hours, acceptable behaviors, break policies and the other rules that govern the office and your position in it.The unofficial side is kind of like the unwritten rules in a professional sport. For example, Major League Baseball teams generally will retaliate if a star player gets hit by a pitch by doing the same to one of the other teams top hitters.Offices have these sorts of rules, too, and it can be a challenge to know what they are. ansicht arent the things that get you in trouble with human resources or the boss . These are the mistakes you can make that will turn off your coworkers and leave you as an isolated island. Some people take a job and languish in it for a long time. They may bring little to the table or they may be decent at wha t they do. Either way, this type of person is often an office fixture. Even if youre senior in responsibility, show respect for people who have a longer tenure at the company than you do.Those whove been around for the longest periods often have deep connections. They may leid be ambitious when it comes to seeking promotions or leaving for a better opportunity, but they know their place in the organization, and sometimes, they know things that can help you avoid making big and unnecessary mistakes.People often dont have a rational view of their contribution to a project. You may think they barely did anything, while they may think theyve been a major contributor. No matter how much you feel like you led the way, be gracious and share leistungspunkt liberally. Doing that makes you a leader and enhances what your co-workers think of you - and the boss will figure out whats happening over time.Everyone has an occasional workplace complaint . As long as its innocent and infrequent, thats fine and wont raise any concern. What you dont want to be is one of those negative people who leads the complaints. You dont have to be relentlessly upbeat, but you should generally be in good spirits. If someone complains too much, others might go along with it, but some of them might be thinking, If its so awful, why dont you just leave?Thats a valid question, and chronic complainers can quickly get a reputation as malcontents. You dont want you co-workers to see you that way. Many years ago, I worked for an internet company that was not close to my house. I had a brutal commute, had just gotten married and frankly, did not like the job very much. Because of that, while I had a few friends on staff, I mostly did my job then went home. I turned down lunch invites to get more work done faster, never went out for dinner or drinks, and generally was not part of the social fabric of the office. It made it seem like I was already one foot out the door (I was), and isolating myself probably hastened my departure. Even if you dont like your job or plan to leave, you still need to connect with your co-workers, even if only to have it not be obvious youre less-than-engaged.Basically, the unwritten rulebook boils down to be a good person who respects other people. Simple gestures like being more inclusive in your lunch invites or saying hello to everyone the first time you see them goes a long way. Think of how you would expect a child to behave after theyve learned proper manners (or how you wish they would) thats a pretty good behavioral guideline. This article was originally published on The Motley Fool . Lie on Your Resume Dont Be Stupid!

Lie on Your Resume Dont Be StupidLying on Your ResumeLie on Your Resume Dont Be StupidTheres a scene in the 1994 movie Forrest Gump in which the title character, played by Tom Hanks, admits to telling a little white lie, which his mother (played by Sally Field) said was OK to do as long as it didnt hurt anyone.Forrest, though limited in IQ, clearly knew the difference between a little white lie and a whopper. But when it comes to your resume, either one can disqualify you from getting the job. Even if you do get the job, chances are good the lie will eventually be uncovered, and youll be shown the door, hurting both your career and your reputation. Here are three notable examples of resume truth-stretchingAs MITs former dean of admissions discovered last year, a lie can come back to bite you many years later. She resigned after admitting she had misrepresented her academic degrees on her resume when MIT hired her - in 1979.More recently, Robert Irvine, host of the Food Network show Di nner Impossible, did not have his contract renewed by the networkafter he sauted his professional hintergrund a bit, specifically with previous claims that hecooked for the British royal family and at the White House (The network said it might revisit its decision at the end of the season). In 2006, the CEO of retailer Radio Shack resigned after he admitted that his claim ofholding two college degrees was two more than he really had.If youre compelled to lie about, embellish, exaggerate, or misrepresent anything in your work history or educational background, heres one word of advice Dont. Theres just no substitute for telling the truth. And technology is more likely to uncover a lie today, since so much personal data is available on the Internet, and many employers are using Internet searches to help verify data applicants submit on their resumes. And if the lie is uncovered before the employer makes an offer, the employer will likely not tell you they just wont hire you, which leave s you open to repeating the lie the next time you send your resume.Interviewing expertMichael Neece, who has reviewed thousands of resumes in his 20+ years in the staffing and hiring world, says there are legitimate reasonsjob candidates might lie One is to protect themselves and theirformer employers. For instance, if a candidate told the truth about being fired and subsequently filing a sexual harassment lawsuit, he says, it might disqualify the candidate while implicating the former employer. Painting an ex-employer in a negative light is one of those red flags that can go up in the job-search process. Still, its better to find a neutral way to tell the truth.Ifthe truth hurts (or could hurt your chances at landing a job), the best strategy is to stick to the facts in as unbiased a way as you can. If, for instance, you were let go because of a personality clash, or if you and your boss had a difference of opinion over the reasons for your exit, explain the situation matter-of-fac tly in the interview, keeping your emotions in check. Instead of saying, My boss was a micro-managing control freak who wouldnt let me tie my shoes without asking first, try something like, I was released because my independent, get-it-done style - which I and my other employers have always considered to be a strength - just didnt mesh with the new supervisors hands-on management style.A lie or exaggeration on a resume is just plain stupid. And, as Forrest Gump liked to say Stupid is as stupid does.

How to Prepare for a Behavioral Job Interview

How to Prepare for a Behavioral Job InterviewHow to Prepare for a Behavioral Job InterviewWhat is a behavioral interview? Candidates for employment often ask what the difference is between a regular job interview and a behavioral interview. What should you do to get ready if the employer is going to ask you behavioral based interview questions? There isnt a difference in the actual format of the job interview. You will still meet with an interviewer and respond to interview questions. The difference is in the type of interview questions that will be asked. Review information on the difference between behavioral and traditional job interviews, examples of questions, and how to handle a behavioral interview. What is a Behavioral Job Interview? Behavioral based interviewing is interviewing based on discovering how the interviewee acted in specific employment-related situations. The logic is that how you behaved in the past will predict how you will behave in the future, i.e., past p erformance predicts future performance. Traditional Interviews In a traditional interview, you will be asked a series of questions which typically have straightforward answers like What are your strengths and weaknesses? or What major challenges and problems did you face? How did you handle them? or Describe a typical work week. In a behavioral interview, an employer has decided what skills are needed in the person they hire and will ask questions to find out if the candidate has those skills. Instead of asking how you would behave, they will ask how you did behave. The interviewer will want to know how you handled a situation, instead of what you might do in the future. Questions Asked Behavioral interview questions will be mora pointed, more probing and more specific than traditional interview questions Give an example of an occasion when you used logic to solve a problem.Give an example of a goal you reached and tell me how you achieved it.Describe a decision you made tha t was unpopular and how you handled implementing it.Have you gone above and beyond the call of duty? If so, how? What do you do when your schedule is interrupted? Give an example of how you handle it.Have you had to convince a team to work on a project they werent thrilled about? How did you do it?Have you handled a difficult situation with a co-worker? How? Tell me about how you worked effectively under pressure.More behavioral interview questions. Follow-up questions will also be detailed. You may be asked what you did, what you said, how you reacted or how you felt during the situation you shared with the hiring manager. Preparation Whats the best way to prepare? Its important to remember that you will not know what type of interview will take place until you are sitting in the interview room. So, prepare answers to traditional interview questions. Then, since you dont know exactly what situations you will be asked about if its a behavioral interview, refresh your memory and c onsider some special situations you have dealt with or projects you have worked on. You may be able to use them to help frame responses. Prepare stories that illustrate times when you have successfully solved problems or performed memorably. The stories will be useful to help you respond meaningfully in a behavioral interview. You can research the STAR interview response technique, which offers a wayof answeringbehavioral interviewquestions. Finally, review the job description, if you have it, or the job posting or ad. You may be able to get a sense of what skills and behavioral characteristics the employer are seeking from reading the job description and location requirements. During the Interview During the interview, if you are not sure how to answer the question, ask for clarification. Then be sure to include these points in your answer A specific situationThe tasks that needed to be doneThe action you tookThe results, i.e., what happened Its important to keep in mind that t here are no right or wrong answers. The interviewer is simply trying to understand how you behaved in a given situation. How you respond will determine if there is a fit between your skills and the position the company is seeking to fill. So, listen carefully, be clear and detailed when you respond and, most importantly, be honest. If your answers arent what the interviewer is looking for, this position may not be the best job for you.

How Not to Be a Lazy Job Seeker

How Not to Be a Lazy Job Seeker How Not to Be a Lazy Job Seeker collected advice from several experts for tips on how NOT to be a lazy job seeker and even some tips on not seeming desperate when you really want the job. Nabbing the interview  Let’s start at the beginning. You find the listing, you must apply! Unfortunately, you are likely one out of 200+ who will apply within the first hour of the job being posted! So, just how do you stand out? “I recommended an idea to someone who actually landed a job as a Financial Analyst at a well known financial services firm without any financial analysis work experience, “ shared Abby Kohut,  author of Absolutely Abbys 101 Job Search Secrets. “He sent an egg timer from a Boggle game with a resume and a note that said, ‘If you give me this much time, Ill prove to you why I am the best Financial Analyst youll ever have.’ He got the interview and then got the job.” Job applications are like books that employers judge by their covers, so make your cover letter and resume super-intriguing and be sure to do your homework. “The highly motivated person learns more about the position before they even decide to apply,” instructed Terri A. Deems, PhD of Deems Associates/WorkLife Design. “Then, tailor the resume and cover letter to that position, based on what was learned.” Deems went on to point out the difference between expressing your interest and, well, seeming disinterested. “The unmotivated person just slaps something together just like theyve done with any number of other positions and sends it off. The motivated person takes their time, plans their strategy, and creates just the materials the decision-makers need to see. The materials must be letter-perfect theres no room for errors here another sign of being motivated a job getter cares enough to proofread and spell check! Prepping for the interview  Getting to this stage is half the battle, so congratulations if you have set yourself apart from the crowd! However, there’s still a battle to be won, so be sure to keep on with your strategy. “The best way to show a potential employer that you are excited about a position is to have done in-depth research on the company,” Bruce Hurwitz of Hurwitz Strategic Staffing, Ltd. shared. “People who want a job study the company website. People who want a career at a company go much deeper than that. Theyll find press releases, research key employees, etc. and work the results of that research into the interview.” How exactly will going the extra mile help you out? Hurwitz continued, “At the end of the day, when all the persons who have interviewed a candidate get together to discuss her, you want them to say, ‘How in the world did she find out that I played on the college hockey team?’ You do not want them to say, ‘She knows our website’ Going the extra mile shows enthusiasm.” Clearly, doing some homework is key. “In fact, set up a Google alert for their company name to stay on top of the latest,” shared Rivka Kawano, of LifeTrainLLC.com.  Ã¢€œIf you have been to an interview, take notes and look for clues as to what their needs and decisions are right now.” Similarly, get a little social. “Follow the company on Twitter and Facebook if theyre active on those platforms,” Rod Hughes of Oxford Communications  recommended. “Be prepared to reference a recent posting during the interview. Landing the job It’s crunch time! You didn’t get this far to walk away empty handed, so now is your chance to seal the deal. “The best way a job seeker can show they are really motivated is to communicate and/or illustrate they have a plan for the area the position is most needy in,” said Tom Gimbel, CEO, LaSalle Network. “For example, youre an accounting manager and you learn that collections are way behind (over 60/90 days). You lay out in writing a plan on how you would reduce the number of days for outstanding invoices. If youre interviewing for a marketing role and you learn the biggest area of frustration for the CEO is internal communication, you should create a PowerPoint deck showing how you would attack the problem.” Or get even more creative with your approach. “I had a college student who applied for a marketing position (along with 100 other candidates) and told the hiring manager she would work free for two weeks to show what she could do,” shared Barry Cohen, University Employment Coordinator of The City University of New York. “How could a company resist free labor? At the end of the first week, they offered her the position.” Sure, you may prefer a paycheck, but enthusiasm is key nonetheless. “Even if the job hunt has you worn out, dont let that show up in your interaction with gatekeepers and decision makers in the hiring process,” said Tiffani Murray of Personality on Page. “Your energy or the outward display of your energy is used to perceive your level of motivation.” Of course, accepting a job is a big commitment, so make sure its one you want to keep. “There is a limit to how much you can fake being motivated,” advises Hugh Taylor, author of The Life Reset: Overcoming Setbacks in Work and Life.   “Faking will get you pretty far, but you will never appear as motivated to do a job as an applicant who truly loves the work.” And if it will be work you will enjoy, be sure to let them know. “Get a targeted thank you letter off to each person who interviewed you,” Sharon Armstrong, Author of The Essential Performance Review Handbook said.  Ã¢€œMention something that was discussed during the interview so the interviewer knows YOU were there and listening. Again, mention that you want the job if you do. And get that note or e-mail to them very quickly.” Don’t go psycho Sure, we’ve gone over enthusiasm, but we should also probably discuss getting a little TOO enthusiastic. “Calling (or e-mailing) over and over with the same, ‘Have you picked me yet?’ type of questions can help communicate that you are motivated or just desperate and with nothing better to do,” added Kawano. Mistakes to avoid In order to start earning income, you will need to prove your capabilities to do the job, so keep that as your focus. “If you ask about the salary and benefits too soon, it looks as though you are more interested in the money than in the job,” said Mary Greenwood, Author of How to Interview Like a Pro. “Let them think it is not about the money, but what you can do for company. Postpone the money talk as long as you can. If they want you, then the money will follow.” What you definitely do NOT want to do Across the board, career experts agree that job seekers should do their research, demonstrate how their strengths will help an employer with the bottom line and their enthusiasm for the position. With that in mind, make sure to keep all of that in check as well. “Sometimes job seekers go over the top when trying to show how motivated they are, how much they want the position,” Barry Maher of Barry Maher Associates. “One job seeker I met had heard about an opening for a marketing and PR person at a local charity and decided to demonstrate his expertise at grabbing peoples attention. He went to the charitys website and found the names and business contact info for everyone on their board, the people he figured would be making the final decision on the hiring. Then, cutting out letters from a newspaper, he sent each board member a series of letters. The first had just his first name John. The second read John Smith. Then John Smith Is, and so on until the message read John Smith Is Going to Blow. “Then apparently thinking he was clever enough to avoid creating a problem message, the next letter added two words rather than one. It read: John Smith Is Going to Blow You Away! Which is when the police showed up at his door. Before he had the chance to send out the next letter with his resume that explained just how his expertise was in fact going to blow everyone away.” So, remember, a little enthusiasm can go a long way. Too much enthusiasm can put you away…. Good luck with your search!

Top 5 Questions to Ask References About Job Candidates

Top 5 Questions to Ask References About Job Candidates Top 5 Questions to Ask References About Job Candidates Whether you want to hire a new company executive or a personal assistant, hiring the right candidate isnt always easy. After you’ve waded through all of the applications and resumes, you still have to interview a range of individuals, and then reach out to references to determine who is best qualified as the right fit for the job. If you’re tempted to skip calling references altogether, don’t make that mistake. The best way to background check a candidate about his or her skills, employment record, and qualifications is to verify them personally. You can learn everything about the candidate from their personal sense of integrity to how well they interacted with their fellow employees. What should you ask when you call references? What questions will give you the best insight into a potential candidate’s dependability and skills? How do you make the most of the reference checks youre doing? These reference checking questions are recommended for employers to ask about candidates regularly but if you want to start with just a few recommended questions, try asking these five. Top 5 Questions to Ask as You Check References To help answer these questions and to simplify the reference-checking process, here are five specific questions you need to ask. What responsibilities did the candidate have while working with you? This is a basic question that allows you to gain objective information on the work the candidate has done elsewhere. Did a previous job involve the same responsibilities as the one for which you’re hiring? (Some research indicates that potentially, your most successful hires are people who did a very similar job successfully for another employer.) Or did this previous job involve a completely different set of skills? Does this reference give you confidence that the candidate can fulfill the responsibilities of the role for which you’re hiring or not? What were the candidate’s strengths as an employee? This question gives the reference a chance to sing the candidate’s praise, something most references are prepared to do, particularly if the candidate has warned the reference that you will call. What were the areas in need of development that were communicated to the candidate, and how did they respond to them? You don’t only want to know about strengths, but you also want to know the candidate’s weaknesses- information that is harder to glean in a quick reference check. This is a question that allows you to fish for more information. According to Miriam W. Berger at national executive recruitment firm DRG, “This question is a good way to get information regarding performance weaknesses that may not have otherwise been volunteered by the reference.  Listen carefully as the reference describes how the candidate responded to performance improvement needs and direction.” Can you tell me about the candidate’s tenure with your company- did he or she receive any raises, promotions, demotions, and so forth? Why did he or she leave? While this question is fairly objective as well, it will give you valuable intel on the details of the candidate’s former work. Advancements and raises show you that the candidate was moving forward and growing. Demotions may reveal problems you won’t want to deal with in your own business. Likewise, discovering why the candidate left a previous role lets you know upfront about potential character issues relating to the candidate’s being fired or asked to leave a job, if applicable. Is there anything else I should know before hiring this candidate? Whenever “youve made a connection with a reference who is willing to talk with you, make the most of your good fortune by asking open-ended questions that call for in-depth answers,” says HCareers.com. “Within reason, give the reference ample opportunity to answer as comprehensively as they are willing to.” Not only will giving the person a little extra time and opportunity to give you feedback help you gain more information, but it will also round out the perspective you’re able to have about the candidate. Always conclude your conversation by asking if there’s anything else you should know. Give the reference a chance to fill in the gaps with other pertinent details. In addition to the questions above, pay attention to nonverbal communication- how the person pauses, hesitates or has a hard time answering a specific question. Some references are reluctant to relay bad or negative information about a candidate, but by carefully listening to verbal hints, you can gain valuable clues that the candidate has a potential issue that you will need to address when you have hired the candidate.

Advertising Agency Account Executive Job Description

Advertising Agency Account Executive Job Description Advertising Agency Account Executive Job Description An account executive, also sometimes called an AE, is a middleman between clients and the creative department in an advertising agency. A great account executive is the glue that holds a project together.   Account executives facilitate the exchange of information between the agency and the client from the time a client first initiates a request until that campaign is live and the results are collated. Clients have demands, and the account executive takes care of them. Account executives must be on top of the timing of every project to meet crucial print and broadcast deadlines.   Advertising Account Executive Duties Responsibilities Theres no typical day in advertising. This industry experiences daily- if not hourly- challenges and emergencies. But a typical working month for an advertising account executive will usually include the following duties: Meet with clients.Present findings to the agency.Discuss projects with clients.Write briefs.Formulate advertising.Formulate marketing strategies.Define advertising budgets.Present creative work to clients.Present business pitches to clients.Day-to-day administration duties.Organize focus groups.Lead brainstorming sessions. An account director will typically oversee the bigger picture, ensuring that the AE isnt overwhelmed to the point of burning out. AEs provide a critical liaison between the creative staff of the agency and its clients. Theyre creative forces, but theyre also problem-solvers. A keen ability to multitask keeps everything running smoothly. A great deal depends on the accurate and insightful interpretation of clients wishes and goals, and transmitting that information to the appropriate staff within the agency. Advertising Agency Account Executive Salary The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) includes agency account executives in its data for advertising and promotions managers. Those who work for advertising services are the most highly compensated, however, earning a median salary of $134,780 annually as of 2018. Overall, the median incomes for advertising and promotions managers in 2018 were: Median Annual Salary: $117,130 ($56.31/hour)Top 10% Annual Salary: More than $208,000 ($100.00/hour)Bottom 10% Annual Salary: Less than $57,150 ($27.47/hour) Source: U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, 2018 Some travel, long hours, and meals on the go can be involved with this job, but few agencies expect account executives to pay the bills for these costs, particularly for travel. Late evening meals might be a perk of employment. Education, Training Certification Those looking for careers as agency account executives should ideally have a college degree and related experience. Education: A typical account executive will have a four-year college degree in advertising, communication, journalism, business administration, marketing, finance, accounting, or economics. Many advertising agencies look for candidates with a masters degree in one of these fields as a result of increased competition for the job and a flooded marketplace.  Internship: Although its not necessarily required, interning at an ad agency will help get your foot in the door and provide experience you can use on a resume. On-the-job Training: If you have no formal education, begin working at a smaller ad agency in another role, such as an administrative assistant or other entry-level position. Let your boss know that you want to learn other facets of the industry so you can understand how the various positions in the agency work together. Advertising Account Executive Skills Competencies Certain qualities and skills will help you succeed as an AE: Communication skills: Youll need the ability to communicate clearly both verbally and in writing.Organizational skills: Youll be charged with overseeing several projects, and different aspects of projects, so a knack for organization is vital.Interpersonal skills: Excellent people skills and the ability to work with a wide range of people are important.Professional appearance and persona: In many respects, youre the face of your agency.Nerves of steel: You must be able to handle pressure well. Job Outlook The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics anticipates job growth for advertising, promotions, and marketing managers of 10% through 2026. This is somewhat faster than all occupations, but those dealing predominantly with newspaper publishing might not fare as well because electronic media continues to push this industry aside. Seasoned, professional account executives can earn higher salaries and can go on to become partners in advertising agencies.   Work Environment Account executives travel a lot to attend print and video shoots, and this includes both national and international destinations. They may be invited to client functions, as well as creative and agency events. Great account executives will often find themselves dealing with two or three different clients at one time, which can cause untold stress if the AE isnt adequately prepared. Work Schedule More than 30% of all advertising, promotions, and marketing managers worked more than 40 hours a week in 2016, according to the BLS. They arrive at the agency before everyone else to ensure that clients calls are answered, and they often are at the agency after all other departments have left for the day for the same reason. Be prepared to work long hours, especially under tight deadlines. Is Your Status Update Still Looking for Work

Is Your Status Update Still 'Looking for Work' Is Your Status Update Still 'Looking for Work' Be positive, not needy.Lately I’ve been reading a lot of status updates on business and social networking sites that say things like, “Project Manager professional looking for work” or “Looking for work in a tough economy” or “Just received my degree in accounting - looking for work.” While I understand that these job seekers are trying to advertise their candidacy online, I don’t recommend broadcasting this specific message in your status updates. Here’s why: Blasting this message to your entire network makes you look desperate. You might as well rent a billboard to promote your job search… Yes, I know there are stories about people landing a job this way, but these tactics get old fast. (And by the way, the guy who landed a job by wearing a sandwich board saying he was looking for work is “so 2008.”) Posting this message makes people in your network uncomfortable. Imagine agreeing to meet someone for coffee and before the coffee is even cool enough to drink you say, “I’m looking for work.” It’s awkward. It places an unrealistic expectation on your contacts to come up with a solution for you. The same thing happens online when you announce that you are looking for work. Sending this message leaves you little wiggle room for a follow-up message. Think about it. If you are still in a job search next week, what will your status update be? “Still looking for work” isn’t going to cut it. Status updates on business and social-networking platforms like Facebook and LinkedIn are a way for you to build rapport with a community and deepen the relationship with your contacts. Choose messages that showcase your expertise, share valuable information, give kudos to others or broadcast an exciting endeavor you are working on (even if it is volunteer work). Here are some examples of alternative status updates you might want to adapt for your situation:For a fundraising executive: “Volunteering at the American Cancer Society walkathon on Sunday; hope to raise more than $2M.” For an HR professional: “Attending a seminar on compensation plans for 2009 and beyond at (share the link)” For an advertising professional: “My colleague, John Smith, just landed a major account with a leading luxury goods company. Way to go, John!” For a CIO: ”Reading an interesting article on new technologies in health care at (share the link)” For a financial analyst: “Boning up on study materials for the CFA Level II exam … looks like it’s going to be a long night!” Create status updates that invite questions and further conversation, not ones that make your network run for cover. Remember, online networking, like face-to-face networking, is a process. Whenever possible, give before you get and you will be surprised how quickly you get something back in return.
